7 Things You Never Knew You Could Wash In the Dishwasher

by | Dec 16, 2021

If you’re like most people, you’re always looking for ways to save time cleaning. While hiring a professional cleaning company like Cinderella Cleaners is the ultimate time saver, there are some things you can do to make cleaning chores a little easier. From washing machines and dryers to microwave ovens and more, our homes are full of time-saving appliances. But, how about your dishwasher?

You’ve probably gotten really good at packing the dishwasher full of dishes so you have less on your plate (pun intended) when it comes to cleaning. But, there are some other items you can wash in the dishwasher, too, and you may just not have thought of them before.

7 Items You Can Wash in the Dishwasher (Other Than the Dishes)

  • Cleaning tools –

No, not your broom or vacuum cleaner. However, you can wash small cleaning supplies like a sponge, mop head, or toilet brush in the dishwasher. Simply place them on the top rack, add white vinegar to your detergent holder, and run them through on their own cycle for easy cleaning and disinfecting.

  • Oven mitts –

Cloth mitts or potholders can easily be put in your washing machine along with other dirty laundry. What we’re talking about here are silicone oven mitts. You may be able to clean them under the faucet periodically, but running them through the dishwasher is a great way to clean and disinfect them without a lot of work.

  • Children’s toys –

Whether used in the bath or on the playroom floor, toys can pick up a lot of dirt and germs … not exactly what you want to expose your toddler to. From rubber duckies to plastic blocks and teething rings, these are items you can wash in the dishwasher on the top rack. If they’re small, put them in a mesh bag to keep them from falling through the rack onto the lower heating element.

  • Dishes for your pet –

Eating and drinking out of clean bowls is important for your pet’s health, just like you want to use clean dishes for your own wellbeing. As long as they’re made of dishwasher-safe material, these are items you can wash in the dishwasher, too!

  • Makeup and hair care accessories –

Have you ever thought of how many germs and how much grime hair brushes, makeup brushes, and combs can accumulate over time? As long as they’re made of plastic, you should be able to wash them in the dishwasher.

  • Light fixtures –

As part of our deluxe cleaning service, we often clean light fixtures in place. However, if you haven’t cleaned yours in a long time and the glass globes are removable, don’t be afraid to put them in the dishwasher.

  • Exhaust fan filter –

Most people have an exhaust fan inside the range hood over their oven. And, it’s typically covered with a filter that collects grease. While your kitchen countertops and sink might be things you clean every day, your exhaust fan filter probably isn’t and it can get pretty nasty! Simply remove it periodically and put it in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Bonus Tip:

With it often being run one or more times a day, you might think that your dishwasher doesn’t need to be cleaned. After all, it cleans itself, right? Wrong!

Over time, your dishwasher collects all kinds of things – undissolved detergent, food particles, hard water minerals, grease, and more. The good news is, you don’t have to spend hours cleaning your favorite cleaning machine. Instead, follow these steps to clean your dishwasher quickly and effectively:

  1. Fill a bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar.
  2. Place the bowl securely on the top rack of your dishwasher.
  3. Run your dishwasher through a normal cycle – make sure it’s empty other than the vinegar bowl. No dishwasher detergent is necessary.
