How to Clean Baking Mishaps With Ease

by | Apr 26, 2021

There’s nothing quite as tasty as a delicious home-cooked meal. But, what happens when baking mishaps create a mess? While you mutter under your breath and wish you had been more careful, it’s time to get cleaning! Fortunately, our professional cleaners have some tips to get you started …

More Than a “Spoonful of Sugar”

According to Mary Poppins, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. But, what goes down when the whole bag of sugar spills? Usually some choice words!

While the situation can certainly be frustrating, it’s not the end of the world. However, it’s best to get cleaning while the sugar’s still dry. Simply vacuum it up and then empty the canister or vacuum bag into the garbage to prevent pests from discovering it.

If the sugar gets damp, it can eventually harden or become sticky. Vacuum or sweep up whatever’s dry and use a cloth with warm soapy water to clean up the rest.

Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk!

Milk spills are typically cleaned easily when they happen on hard floors. Simply mop up larger spills with soap and water, or use a damp soapy cloth to clean up smaller ones.

The situation becomes a little trickier if you spill milk on carpet, however. If you don’t do a thorough cleaning job, you’ll smell it later!

For carpet spills, soak up as much milk as possible with a sponge or cloth. Then, mix dish soap or laundry detergent with warm water. Dip a clean cloth in the cleaning mixture and blot the milk spill several times. Blot again with a clean, dry cloth to absorb the moisture.

Lastly, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and let it sit for about 30 minutes. This will absorb more moisture, neutralize odors, and can easily be vacuumed up when finished.

When the Microwave Goes Wonky

When the Microwave Goes Wonky

Microwaves can make baking chores quicker and easier. However, baking mishaps like splattered food or something boiling over can create quite a mess. Here’s our favorite tip for getting your microwave back to fresh:

Baking Mishaps With Glass

Glassware dishes are commonly used for casseroles and other yummy meals. When they’re taken directly from the fridge or freezer and put into a hot oven, however, they can shatter to pieces. Now you have both food AND glass to clean up!

The first step in cleaning up the mess is to turn the oven off and let it cool down. Use this time to make alternate plans for your meal as you won’t want to risk eating food with glass shards in it.

Once it has cooled, open the oven and begin picking out the glass pieces by hand. If you have rubber gloves handy, use them to protect yourself from getting cut. Then, use a damp cloth to wipe up small pieces or press a piece of bread over them to pick them up. Lastly, make a baking soda-water mixture and spray down the oven walls. Wipe up the residue with a clean, damp cloth.

Beyond the Baking Mishaps …

Food spills certainly aren’t the only cause of household messes that require a good cleaning. In fact, pretty much everything we do in our homes leads to dust, clutter, or some other mess that needs to be picked up.
